Sex Trafficking…what’s that?

So in our last adventure, Internet Safety, we talked about harmful things people can and do use the internet for. One of those things was Sex Trafficking. So the next few adventures are going to take us to a place that can be scary but on our trips we are going to learn about what it is, how it happens, and of ways to be proactive and protect ourselves from this happening to us no matter our age or gender. Alright lets go!

So I know this topic can be a bit touchy because some people don’t feel that teen and pre-teens should know about sex trafficking but as a health and phys ed teacher I feel that it is my duty to educate EVERYONE I can about it! I’m not talking about it to scare anyone I am talking about it because it is a serious problem that not all people are aware of in this country. We think that it only happens else where…..well guess what! It happens here all of the time and it is a growing problem. So I feel the need to educate those who read my blogs on what this horrible act is and how to protect yourself from it happening to you.

By definition Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act.

There are many many website out there providing information on human trafficking and sex trafficking but one in particular that I found helpful was the National Human Trafficking Hotline. This terrible act has unfortunately been happening all to often to vulnerable individuals. In 2016 there were 5,556 cases of sex trafficking in the United States. Since 2007 there has been 22,191 total cases of sex trafficking here in the states.

So how do these victims get pulled in? We will explore this in my next adventure post….Stay tuned!!!
